GamFES Evangelism Resource Centre, The Gambia

The Fellowship of  Evangelical Students in the Gambia (GamFES) is an inter-denominational evangelical student movement, established in 1996.

In response to the urgent need for biblically faithful and culturally relevant evangelism materials and training, GamFES’ founder and General Secretary stepped down in early 2009 in order to create the Evangelism Resource Centre (ERC).

Prosperity teaching is rife in The Gambia and  Islam is dominant in Gambian society.  The ERC seeks to address these two problem by equipping people to share the gospel faithfully.  They aim to produce biblically faithful, contextually relevant and locally accessible resources for churches, individuals, student and youth groups to help them with their evangelism.

THE GAMBIA
The Gambia is a very small country in west Africa.  Apart from a small stretch of coastline it is entirely surrounded by Senegal.

Of the country’s 1.5 million inhabitants around 90% are Muslim. However, Gambia is not an Islamic state and Christians have relative freedom.

There are 9 widely spoken languages.

The Project

Stage One in developing the ERC has been successfully completed, (pictured right).  Premises were planned and built in 2008, and a five room building with an outdoor multi-purpose concrete floor was dedicated in January 2009.  This houses a meeting room (to hold 50), a library / office, a caretakers room and rents out two rooms to another ministry and a shop.

Steven Musa Kormayea is the Resource Person in charge of developing the ERC.  His objective is to develop biblical models for evangelism and a training manual that is faithful to the gospel and relevant to the current situation in Gambia.  He is responsible for training student leaders so that they can equip the students to reach other students with the good news.  He will also train ERC Staff to be able to do the same - multiplying the impact of the ERC.

The long term aim of the ERC is to facilitate a sustained nation-wide evangelistic campaign involving individuals, churches, student groups and other Christian organisations.  Alongside this they hope to increase support of Christian work amongst secondary school students.

The successful development and use of the ERC could have a truly dramatic effect on the progress of the gospel in The Gambia.
